Bird Seed Storage
One of the dangers of buying bulk bird seed is the difficulty of storing it. Proper bird seed storage is extremely important to keep the seeds fresh and prevent them from dying and losing their nutritional value. Apart from this, you need to ensure that rats or mice don’t chew through the containers. Other pests like insects also pose a hazard to your precious bird seed. So how do we go about bird seed storage?
By far the most important guideline is to keep the bird seed dry and cool. This will minimize the chance of fungus growing into it. Also, some seeds have the eggs of worms in them. The cooler it is, the less chance there is of them hatching. A place like your garage is ideal. Mealmoths are another huge problem. If you have some eggs in your seed, you’re screwed. You might as well throw it away. But you won’t know till they hatch (unless you spot the larvae first) and then it’ll be too late.
Large plastic or metal containers are the safest to store your bird seed in. Especially if they have nice tight lids that are completely airtight. This is the best way to store bulk bird seed since you won’t be able to keep it in the house. Practice proper bird seed storage and you can keep your bird meals fresh and nutritious!
